The European Commission is proposing revisions to tachograph legislation that will apparently make fraud more difficult and reduce administration costs.

The proposal includes using satellite positioning to replace manual location recordings with automatic ones, using remote communications to target roadside checks on the likeliest offenders, imposing higher standards on workshops who install and calibrate tachographs, and merging driving licences with driver cards. This final proposal particularly will help to combat fraud, as driver cards can easily be handed to colleagues at the moment.

The Freight Transport Association has welcomed the proposals, but has requested a more complete explanation of the European Commission's claim that the measures will produce an annual saving of 500 million euros.
