In a move that should put a smile on lots of faces, our old friend Mike Penning - Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport - recently announced that the government will be permitting the development of truckstops on UK motorways. This follows a policy consultation which showed strong support for the proposal.
Until now, truckstop facilities which can be accessed directly from motorways - imaginatively called motorway truckstops - were not permitted. Proposals for new facilities will now be considered in the context of existing rest facilities on the strategic road network, and each will be judged on their individual merit. So will truckers get a good night's sleep at last? We'll keep an eye on this story to see how it develops...
